A brand new trade association for the domain name industry is now located at WhatDomain.org, which contains brief information about plans for the association, and urges potential members to show their interest. A clear agenda is yet to be set, but the intention is to “establish an organization that will act as an advocate for the global domain name industry and enhance the domain name business environment”. Details such as membership tiers and fees are yet to be determined.
Google is reportedly lending its support to get the project up and running, though it is understood that Google will step back as soon as the project is well established.
During a session at the Digital Marketing & gTLD Strategy Congress in New York on 11th March, 2013 Sally Costeron, ICANN’s head of stakeholder engagement, suggested ICANN would help support the initiative for a new gTLD trade association.
