American International Group, Inc. (AIG) is the latest company to withdraw a new gTLD application, for .Chartis, from ICANN. .Chartis, which was proposed as a closed registry, is the 19th withdrawn new gTLD application listed on ICANN’s website.
AIG described its application for .Chartis in considerable detail, outlining a range of benefits to Internet users and consumers, which included establishing “a trusted source of information and an online marketplace for the millions of consumers who purchase insurance products from Chartis, for investors and third parties seeking information, and for the general Internet user population”. Other benefits claimed by AIG in support of its application included minimizing costs and reducing potential risks of counterfeiting and infringement of goods and services.
AIG is maintaining its new gTLD application for .AIG, which has a priority number of 174. .Chartis was numbered 1782 (out of 1931), which would have meant postponing a launch indefinitely.
