ICANN has officially closed its office in Sydney, Australia, with sources claiming that all three ICANN employees working there were let go over the Christmas holiday season.
The closure is a strategic move by the new executive team, as part of a company reorganisation strategy and cost cutting exercise focussing on ICANN’s facilities. The office rent in Sydney was US$155,000 per year.
An ICANN spokesperson commented: “ICANN is in the process of assessing how to effectively grow ICANN resources around the globe. This is an on-going process that will require consultation with the Board.”
Jobs have been confirmed as safe at ICANN’s other satellite offices in Palo Alto and Washington D.C., U.S., though both those offices are to relocate nearby to cut costs.
ICANN’s headquarters are in Los Angeles, U.S., having recently relocated from a neighbouring suburb. ICANN also has a European office in Brussels.
